Defeat
On a cold December night, the football team at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina suffers a devastating last-second loss to Douglas-Byrd High School of Fayetteville, NC.
Victory
In Boone, North Carolina, students of Appalachian State University poured into the streets to celebrate what many called the biggest upset in college football history. The Mountaineers of Appalachian state traveled westward and defeated the mighty Michigan Wolverines in front of a crowd exceeding 100,000. The team returned home as local heroes, forever embedded in the lore of this small town. Several shots from this series were published in a gallery on Sports Illustrated’s website.
The Fruits of Davy Crockett
In San Antonio, Texas, the legacy of Davy Crockett lingers in a unique and sometimes ironic series of juxtapositions between the venerable and the absurdly modern. The photos in this essay were taken at the beginning of April, 2008, at the time I was covering the NCAA Final Four.
Hayes Bryan Cemetary
Hayes-Bryan Cemetery sits very quietly on a mountain in Boone, North Carolina. The cemetery has existed for over 100 years, but has recently been neglected and not regularly maintained. This fact actually creates a beautiful merging of the dead and the living, illuminating the unremitting process of life on earth. These photos were taken as a part of a larger essay about family cemeteries in Boone for the town’s “High Country Magazine” in 2007.
